Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a condition in which the heart muscle becomes abnormally thickened. In some patients, this can obstruct blood flow from the heart.
Symptoms may include breathlessness, chest discomfort, palpitations, dizziness or fainting.
Some patients may also have an increased risk of dangerous heart rhythms and sudden cardiac arrest.
Treatment depends on symptoms, obstruction, heart rhythm, family history and individual risk factors. Options may include medicines, rhythm management and, in selected patients, an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD).
